India’s Golden Triangle is one of the most popular and rewarding routes for travelers who want to explore the country’s rich history, culture and diversity. The Golden Triangle covers three of India’s most famous cities: Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. These cities form an almost equilateral triangle on the map and offer a stunning contrast of ancient monuments, vibrant bazaars and colorful festivals. In this blog post, I will share with you how I spent 3 amazing days in the Golden Triangle, and give you some tips on how you can do the same.
Day 1: Delhi
I spent the morning exploring Old Delhi with a local guide who showed me around the narrow lanes and hidden gems of this fascinating area. I was amazed by the architecture and history of the Red Fort and Jama Masjid, and enjoyed sampling some delicious street food at Chandni Chowk. I also visited Raj Ghat, the memorial site of Mahatma Gandhi, who led India’s independence movement.
In the afternoon, I switched gears and headed to New Delhi to see some of its landmarks and attractions. I took a walk along Rajpath, the ceremonial boulevard that connects India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan. I also visited Qutub Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is the tallest brick minaret in the world. I learned about its history and significance from my guide, who also told me some interesting stories about its construction and legends.
I ended my day with a visit to Lotus Temple, a beautiful Bahai house of worship that is shaped like a lotus flower. I was impressed by its serene atmosphere and its message of unity and harmony among all faiths.
Day 2: Agra
I arrived at Agra just in time to catch the sunrise over the Taj Mahal. It was a magical sight that I will never forget. The Taj Mahal looked like a dream as it changed colors with the rising sun. I spent some time admiring its beauty and taking photos from different angles. I also entered inside the mausoleum to see the tombs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal.
After visiting the Taj Mahal, I went to see another impressive monument in Agra: Agra Fort. This is a massive red sandstone fort that was built by Akbar, Shah Jahan’s grandfather and one of the greatest Mughal emperors. The fort has many palaces, mosques, gardens and halls that showcase the Mughal architecture and art. I enjoyed exploring the fort and learning about its history and significance.
In the afternoon, I took a short drive to Fatehpur Sikri, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once the capital of the Mughal empire. Fatehpur Sikri is a complex of buildings that were built by Akbar to commemorate his victory over Gujrat . The complex includes a mosque, a palace, a tomb and a victory gate. I was amazed by the blend of Hindu and Islamic styles in the buildings and the intricate carvings and decorations.
I returned to Agra in the evening and had a delicious dinner at a local restaurant. I also did some shopping at the Agra bazaar, where I bought some souvenirs and handicrafts.
Day 3: Jaipur
I started my day with a visit to Amber Fort, a magnificent hilltop fort that was the residence of the Rajput rulers of Jaipur. The fort is a masterpiece of Rajput architecture, with its red sandstone and marble walls, courtyards, gardens and halls. I also enjoyed an elephant ride up to the fort, which was a fun and memorable experience.
After visiting Amber Fort, I went to see another iconic landmark of Jaipur: Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Winds. This is a five-story pink sandstone building that has 953 windows that were used by the royal ladies to watch the street life without being seen. The building looks like a honeycomb and has a unique design that allows the breeze to flow through it.
I then headed to the City Palace, which is still the official residence of the royal family of Jaipur. The palace is a complex of buildings that display the splendor and opulence of the Rajput kings. I saw some of the halls, museums, galleries and gardens that showcase the royal history and culture of Jaipur.
I also visited Jantar Mantar, an astronomical observatory that was built by Maharaja Jai Singh II in the 18th century. Jantar Mantar has 19 instruments that measure time, sun, moon and planets. I was fascinated by the accuracy and ingenuity of these instruments and learned how they work from my guide.
I ended my day with a visit to Birla Mandir, a white marble Hindu temple that is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. The temple is illuminated at night and looks stunning against the dark sky. I attended the evening prayer ceremony and felt a sense of peace and spirituality.
